With so many businesses in
Lagos, the need to advertise is becoming increasingly necessary. But the fact remains
that many people often times confuse marketing with advertising or vice versa. Yes,
while both components are important towards achieving the same end result which
is getting a product or service sold, they are distinct from each other.
Knowing and understanding the difference between marketing and advertising will
help your company grow tremendously. Thus, I felt that it is worth taking a
closer look at, so as to shed some light.
Let's start by reviewing the
formal definitions of each.
According to
Wikipedia,Marketing is "the activity, set of institutions, and
processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings
that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.”Wikipedia
also defined Advertising in business “as
a form of marketing communication
used to encourage, persuade, or manipulate an audience (viewers,
readers or listeners; sometimes a specific group) to take or continue to take
some action. Most commonly, the desired result is to drive consumer behavior
with respect to a commercial offering”.
Let’s briefly look at the
major difference of both;
It’s important to note that
“Marketing” is a process and as such takes time. An effective marketing
strategy involves the use of colors, logos, illustrations etc. To influence
perception and sales of your products and services.Marketing is alsothe larger
process of successfully selling products or services to the consumer from start
to finish. It may begin as early as the research and development stage and
involves market research, product development, pricing, sales strategies,
distribution, advertising and public relations
.
While Advertising is a
single component of the marketing process. It's the part that involves getting
the word out concerning your business, product, or the services you are
offering. It involves the process of developing strategies which includes the
placement of an ad in such mediums as newspapers, television, direct mail,
billboards, television, radio, and of course the Internet. Advertising is the
largest expense of most marketing plans, with public relations following in a
close second.
By contrast, marketing
presents the overall picture for how the company will promote, distribute, and
price its products or services; while one of the ways that promotion will take
place is through advertising.
It is very important to note
that, identifying the difference between marketing and advertising, and doing
your marketing research well can make the difference in your business or
organizational growth.
